The Special Olympics Victoria State Games returned to the City of Casey for 2024, with Casey Stadium serving as a key venue. The event kicked off last Saturday morning with a moving fire ceremony, welcoming 280 athletes who competed in basketball, netball, gymnastics, and table tennis. This year’s games are spread across two weekends, with the winter games taking place from July 6-7, and the summer games taking place in September.
The multi-sport event showcases the talents of athletes with intellectual disabilities and autism, featuring a wide range of sports including athletics, football, golf, swimming, and more. The opening ceremony at Casey Stadium was a highlight of the weekend, featuring the Victoria Law Enforcement Torch Run. Adding to the excitement, this year’s games provided an opportunity for athletes to qualify for the 2026 Special Olympics Australia National Games, raising the stakes and enthusiasm among participants.
The community turned out to support the athletes, creating an inspiring atmosphere throughout the weekend. The success of this first weekend sets a positive tone for the upcoming September games, as Casey ARC eagerly anticipates hosting the swimming event on Saturday, 21 September!
Congratulations to all the athletes who participated in the games, and we also extend our heartfelt thanks to the volunteers whose efforts made these games possible.
