Summer is just around the corner
Australia recorded 323 drowning fatalities in 2024/25, highlighting the urgent need for stronger water safety skills across the community.
Alarming research shows that nearly half of Year 6 students (48%) are unable to swim 50 metres or tread water for two minutes, the most basic survival benchmark. Parents share the same concern, with 46% of 11–12-year-olds falling short of the Victorian government’s water safety standard.
These figures paint a clear picture: water safety has never been more important.
Swimming lessons do more than teach the basics. They build confidence, resilience, and vital survival skills that could one day save a life. Ensuring children can swim is not only a matter of recreation, but of safety and community responsibility.
With summer approaching, now is the time for families to prioritise swimming education and give their children the lifelong skills to thrive in and around the water.
